People in Corsica!

October 19, 2015
Mom's letter:
Yeah things are going well with our Amis they are still more or less interested in what we have to teach, but the thing is here in France is a a lot of bad publicity that comes out against Mormons and it
seems like everyone we talk to has seen something about polygamy or about us not having electricity or just weird stuff and so we run into those questions a lot even with people we have known for a long time! Sabrina is doing well after her baptism though! She has been to church and just got confirmed this past week! We went to the beach and played football with her today along with her little siblings and one of our other Amis and it was super fun! We had to teach everyone how to throw a football cause nobody here knows how to do it haha it's super entertaining!

We have a member here named Karin, and her husband is not a member and he is in the military and he is actually in Marseille right now working and I guess right before he left Karin gave him a Book of Mormon and this week when we went over to her house, he called her just randomly and so us being the missionaries asked him if he had read in the Book of Mormon and he said yes! And he actually really liked it, so we started talking about it and shared a couple scriptures and Karin shared her favorite scripture that is about captain Moroni and his soldiers and stuff and he was super sparked by it! He then asked us where the church in Marseille was and so I explained to him how to get there and he went! He met with the missionaries there and I guess he is gonna start meeting with them
regularly! This is a man that we NEVER thought would be interested but literally God gave him to us like a gift this week... 😳 literally insane! Tell the missionaries I say hi! Haha all the way from the
Bastia branch of 12 members 😊 haha

Love you mom

Dad's Letter:
That's cool to hear Josh Kirk is almost on his mission., it is really weird to see all the younger generation people starting to come into the mission field, cause it feels like just yesterday or a couple weeks ago I was in exactly their spot. And now I am in the little bit older group of people and getting older everyday! I just realized how long I really have been gone... Haha and I don't even have 10 months left... I have about 9 months supposedly... So time is flying by! But I really like that quote hat it is the best two years for your life, it is so true that you learn things on your mission that you wouldn't be able to learn otherwise in such a short period of time. Like a language, how to deal with your money, be away from family and just things we do everyday as missionaries that we forget about because they seem normal to us. But it's true if we are keeping the commandments we will never have those big consequences that come with making those big mistakes. They are just that net out in he water protecting us from sharks that are lurking in the farther waters.

That's super awesome for Jeremy! And yeah he is in Valance with Elder Woodward who came in with me. I don't know him too well because I have never served around him but I am sure Palani is gonna love it! His zone leader is Elder Haws and his district Leader is Elder Sorenson my two favorite people from Lyon! So Palani or Elder Thangaraj is in good hands.

That's toooo sick that Utah is number 3 I am gonna rub that in so many peoples faces... Haha jk. But really I am so stoked to hear that Utah is finally getting the year that we were all waiting for! They always have a really good defense and from the looks of the score our offense is figuring it out a little bit more than they have in the past! Yeah I love seeing those highlights on the cloud too!

So the things that are new this week are that we were in Nice for a couple days like I already told you I think last week! But we went up there to get my legality done so I would be able to stay here and then leave France with no problems so we got all that figured out and it is always a nightmare haha the French government is just funny and complicated... But yeah we came back this week ready to do do a lot of work and get everything going for the new transfer, so we got to work and we went out finding one night in a little village not to far from Bastia, sorta by murato where one of our Amis lives and went to try and find another one so that way our ami could have someone to come to church with hopefully! But no one was willing to listen to us haha I guess the jehovah witnesses went through last week and ported the whole place out! So everyone would open the door and say "oh your people passed last week and it doesn't interest me" and then just shut the door in our faces haha so after a couple hours of that we were walking back near our car and there was a guy who leans out his window so we started talking to him just friendly and he came down and actually talked to us! Wow... Haha we are gonna go back next week to teach him a little bit more but he was mostly interested in talking about America and Obama.. But we will turn the subject on him real quick once we go back next time. People on Corsica are so funny, you can change the subject in the middle of the conversation and they won't even miss a beat. They will just hop right on board and continue down the new road of conversation which you have presented them. But that was just one of the experiences we had this week that was pretty cool!

Anyway love you all!

October 24, 2015
Yeah I saw those pictures and they were super cool! The beauty of southern Utah is so different than anything here in France and to be honest I kinda miss it a lot. The beauty here is super cool though don't get me wrong but nothing like your own home land.. I would love to go be able to do all those fun things with you guys when I get back! I see you bought the whole outfit too! You are getting pretty stylish with it though so that's good news!

That's too bad about Utah, do you think they will have the chance to get back into the top 5 or is it basically over for them now that they lost? I would still love to see Utah win the PAC12 finally! Or maybe next year they will get it! But I went on each exchange this week with Elder Jesse Wade, you'll need to look him up. Haha he is going to Gonzaga on a basketball scholarship when he gets home and he is such a baller. We got along really well and had a lot of fun down in Ajaccio.
We went and saw one of their amies and then went and did some contacting then the day was over. We spent most of the day driving in between Bastia and Ajaccio cause it's like 2.5 hours. When I get back the drive to Powell will be like nothing. Haha

At least you have a lot of trips though! That right there is a blessing, especially with family! That is what I miss the most probably. Just good ole family time.

Things are going good here in Bastia more or less, we had a couple members who aren't allowed to come anymore because their family is opposing it and so we lost a couple meme beds who were coming regularly so this past week we had a couple less people than normal.
We were looking at about 9 I think, counting us. It was unusually slow this week at church. But normally we do a lot to keep things going here. We give talks and lead the music and give the prayers and give lessons and council with members. There are serval families that are struggling in the branch, all relating to people just not being on the same page or communicating with each other. That is gonna be something I am gonna have with my family, open communication haha I think you and mom have done a pretty good job of that with us kids. But yeah Karin's husband didn't make it to church this week which was too bad but I think he will be able to come next week. Church here is very particular though the French people are just very talkative so there is never a dry moment.

This week we had a lot of ups and downs, our elevator broke for a couple days and we live on the seventh floor so it was a hike up the stairs for us all week, we lost contact with a super cool family, but we found a bunch of really nice people who might be interested in taking an English class from us or we also have started teaching a Portuguese family, his name is Sosa and he is about 50 years old I think. He downloaded the gospel library app and has been reading from that! We should be seeing him this week so yeah! Things are going well!

Anyway! Love you all!
Have fun on Halloween!

October General Conference

Letter to Dad, October 5, 2015
Yeah sounds like you had a pretty busy week! But that's good! At least
you didn't get called as an apostle this week... Haha then you would
have been SUPER busy. Maybe next time.. But yeah we were able to watch
both morning sessions live (it's the night for us) but still. We were
able to get on this lovely thing called our iPad and watch it live
haha I really liked all the talks about mothers and women and stuff,
they were really directed at me specifically but at the same time we
can all take a step back and really relate to what they are saying. I
know it made me think a bit more about what type of person I wanna
marry and what I would have to do to marry someone like that.  You got
lucky with mom.. But maybe unlucky as well... Cause they always say
the apostles are only reflections of their wives... So maybe in a
couple conferences they'll be callin R. Fredrick Schettler to the
pulpit. Hahaha you aren't apostle quality but mom just might be.. So
be careful.

It was sorta hard to watch Thomas s Monson talk, he is getting a
little old and fragile. But no need to worry, cause it is all the
Lord's timing.

Yeah I sent mom most of the school stuff I was thinking about. I have
been thinking maybe UVU, USU, or maybe a BYU-I or Hawaii ( anything but
Provo) but I would mostly just like to maybe see a list of majors and
other stuff, I would probably just go there for two years and then
transfer. Maybe even LDSBC if they have good majors. So for now I just
need to see the majors and that should help me make a more educated
decision on what path I am wanting to take and everything. But if I
end up at BYU it's not cause I like them... But because that is where
are the future wives are haha.

Well two threesomes is mostly because it is a branch and a group
(group is like a mini branch) so we in total combined have about 20
people come to church so our branch couldn't handle two equipes of
missionaries and the Ajaccio group couldn't either. So they couldn't
do that and also my companion is branch president so that forces us to
go see a lot of sisters considering that we only have 1 priesthood
holder in our branch the rest are sisters. So we can't see them if we
are just two missionaries and they are alone, it just made it simpler
to make us a threesome so we wouldn't have to worry about finding
another man to always be with us. But this is the last week of the
transfer so I will be getting my call to know if I get to go train
elder Thangaraj or if I stay in Bastia haha jk I probably won't be
training Palani... But I would love too! He is almost here! I have
been waiting since April for this!

October 14, 2015
Utah is looking super good this year! I am a little sad that I can't be there to go to the games and watch everything with you guys but next season when they are defending national champions I will be just as happy. Haha but I bet Utah is getting hooked up this year cause they are super good with new uniforms and stuff. They had retro jerseys! Super cool! Just remember if you see anything cool that Christmas isn't too far around the corner.. Haha

But those dirt bikes sound super fun too! We will have to take those out and give them a ride when I get back! I would love to do that if we get the chance! Write down all the cool trails so you do not for get where we need to go back, preferably the easier ones so I don't kill myself right off the bat. That's good that mate is playing goalie! I am happy to hear he is enjoying it too! It will be fun to watch him play when I get back and maybe give him some pointers on what to do. The weather here on Corsica is still pretty mild I can swear a short sleeve shirt everyday, but a light sweater is good at night. I really enjoy the weather down here and I'm sure you would too! It is getting colder but for now it is pretty nice.

I'm sorry to hear about Charlie and his knee! I know how much missionaries love the senior couples and I can tell you he will be missed in his mission until he gets back! Maybe you and mom will serve a senior mission someday! Haha you could request to serve in Spain again! Jk

But yeah this week we mostly spent trying to prepare Sabrina for her baptism and to get everything ready. We had to go pick a spot, teach her a couple more lessons get her interview done and set up how we were gonna do church because she had to do it in Sunday! She works on every other day of the week and so yeah. It was a very work stressful work in the sense that we had to do a lot of problem solving and stuff. It was fun to prepare another baptism though! We also had to go to nice this week to figure out my legality so I can stay here in France! Haha so we took the boat to Toulon and drove over to nice on Monday morning! Then after a couple stressful events we finally got everything we needed to do what we needed to at the legal offices and we then showed up and it was too late for that day! So we had to cancel our boat that we were going to take that night and spent the night with the Nice zone leaders. Then the next morning we woke up early and got there just as it opened and got my stuff done by 12!
Then we went directly to the port to take our boat back to Corsica. It was during the day so it was sorta boring and we didn't have a cabin so we had to sit on hard chairs the whole time, but I guess it is our own fault for mission the one the day before! But now I am legal in France so that is all good! The faith building thing this week was he baptism of Sabrina! It is always such a cool experience to baptize some one and see all the changes they make in their life and the blessing and huge changes in their lives that as so easily recognizable by people around them.

My friends are all doing well. I hear from them every week more or less and mom sends me updates on them once a month so I am never too far behind. I hear mark Olsen opened a little snack thingy in Holladay and is supposedly doing pretty well from what I hear? But anyway, they are all doing pretty well!

As for college I am thinking that UVU and probably and if that doesn't work out I would also like to apply to Utah state. So information on those two would be great! Thanks so much for doing this. We will need to find money for scholarships though.

September in Corsica

Letter to Dad Sept 13, 2015
Dang you guys keep getting more and more busy it seems sometimes! But
it's better to be busy and have things to do that be sitting around
not doing anything, serving in one way or another is the only way to
go. Yeah maybe one day I will end up being scout leader cause I am an
Eagle Scout too haha only by a couple hours though... Barely made it!
That was over a year ago that I earned that award! Crazy... I'm glad
to hear the Utes didn't get a very unneeded loss at the beginning of
the season like they normally do, but that's too bad about Travis
Wilson! I am missing his senior season... Sorta sad. I hope he comes
back soon. I just remember that HUGE block he threw down on some ucla
guy a few years ago and it makes me laugh. All I ever hear is how good
byu is and everything, so it's refreshing to hear the real side of
things (the Utah side) haha but hey I guess they are prayin a lot, and
prayer seems to work... Testimony builder?? Haha

I'm glad to hear I'm not completely forgotten from the lacrosse world
yet! But yeah that Brighton game was the most saves I've ever had in a
game, so it was a good way to end my high school lacrosse. We actually
were closer to winning than corner canyon was that year against
Brighton, so we technically took second... Haha I'm glad Nate is
playing though, he has a great stick I'm sure. He just has to never let
it leave his hands even when he is home, at Coleman's house we would
carry sticks around everywhere and always be playing and I think that
helped me a lot. So if he can find someone to lax with all the time
that would be awesome.

This week I went on an exchange after zone training which we Skyped
into. We were just in the church in Bastia and everyone else was in
nice all together haha. It too expensive to send us over there a lot
so yeah we don't go. But I spent 4 days down in Ajaccio with elder
Brown from skyline and Elder Richmond from Texas. We had a lot of fun,
and I got to meet them better than I knew hem before which wasn't too
much. They tried to play a trick on me with a member, but I'd already
heard about them doing it before so I caught on haha and it made him
sorta mad, he was just like "who told you?!" Cause he was gonna
pretend to mug me haha but yeah I just kept laughing and yeah it
didn't work. Yeah we actually went to a tiny village and knocked on a
guy's door and he instantly invited us to sit down and partake of his
grapes he was growing and then gave us cake and water, all before he
knew why we were there haha we ended up talking and when we left we
left him with a Book of Mormon, but only after the struggle of
convincing him that he didn't need to pay us for it. So sometimes it's
really easy but other times people just shut the door before we even
say hi. So it depends. As for food we buy cheese and a sausage every
week just to experience it a little, but restaurants we don't really
eat at too often. It is too expensive and we don't have a ton of time
either.

The new things in the mission all happened this week actually! He
changed a lot of the rules with things that we can and can't do, we
can't go to the beach anymore(between may1 and oct,1), we can't talk
with other missionaries, we can't use our slang of incoming
missionaries and their trainers (we would say 'dad' for trainer and
'son' for blue) and other slang terms we can't say. And just some
other things were changed so I guess I was lucky to be able to go in
Marseille and Bastia before it changed. Idk it's starting to change a
lot and it's weird. He is a lot more strict with missionaries than
president Roney but we will see how things keep going.

Letter to mom, Sept 13, 2015
Nate and dad will have a lot of fun together, and I know the scouts
are gonna now be doing a lot of boating and water activities... Haha
ok you can give them to fanny, She might even be able to give it to
Elder Tihopu cause I should see him next week at zone conference in
Aix, but tell her she can decide cause she probably knows which one is
faster. We don't need chocolate but ranch would be good!

This week was actually stake conference, I watched in Ajaccio (where
napoleon Bonaparte is from) because I was on exchange down there with
my district leader and so we actually had 8 people there at their
house watching a stream from Toulon where the stake conference was. I
saw Frère Faudin cause he translated for the area 70 who came to speak
but I just saw him haha but I saw a proposal this week! We were in
Ajaccio and they have an amie who wants to be baptized and she needs
to get married before she can cause she lives with her boyfriend so we
were there and we asked if they had talked about it and she said no
and then she just turns and is like 'tu veux te marier avec moi?"
Hahaha which is basically saying "you wanna get married?" Just so
straight up and he didn't even hesitate and said yes haha so she is
going to get the papers and everything ready for that!

The way we find new people is just going porting, so we will go to big
buildings and just knock on doors haha but we have a bunch of Amis we
usually only do like and hour or two a day. The most exciting thing
about Bastia is that we are the more beautiful out of the two cities
with missionaries. Haha I was in Ajaccio and it wasn't as beautiful as
Bastia so that made me pretty excited. I got the most beautiful of the
most beautiful island in the world. The craziest person is one of our
amies she calls herself la chouette which means "the owl" haha and she
is like 70 and just a little off her knocker. She is really nice but
just takes things really weirdly sometimes haha and yes they love
napoleon down here but mostly in Ajaccio. And the cool fact is that
people still live in villages on the island and there are villages of
like 120 people sometimes and yeah it's just really weird. They don't
do anything with society or the French people, the Corsican people
hate French people! But they technically are French... So yeah...
Sorta weird.

Love you all

Elder Schettler

Sept 20, 2015
Right now I am about half way through my 9th transfer and as elders we
normally do about 16 transfers so I just passed the half way point.
But that lake Powell trip sounds like it was a lot of fun. That's
crazy to think Mary will be able to go to dances and everything this
year! And Nate is hopping in the goal? Haha never thought that he
would be getting in there.

Our lessons this week were pretty cool, I went to Ajaccio again this
week for another exchange so I spent the day down there, we went and
saw a guy that I contacted last time I was there and we played ping
pong with him and his sister and we had a good talk with his dad as
well. He is 23 and lives at home, his name is Jean-Lou which means
John wolf haha he is super funny. I was there with elder Richmond and
elder Frost came there with me this time. Then our other lessons his
week were pretty good, we had 15 lessons which was our goal and we met
some cool people. Peoples lives here are normal... Idk... Corsica
people are just very influenced by the people around them cause it's
an island and so yeah. My favorite part of Bastia is the food. There
is good sausage and good cheese... super Frenchy.

We played soccer like two weeks ago and that was pretty fun, we met a
couple people and got numbers and hope to be able to play with them
again, but for the most part we don't play a whole lot of sports. When
we played I was just that person who steals the goals from the cross.
Cherry picker. I got 5 or so goals haha Americans playin soccer with a
bunch of Africans..

Yeah we are usually pretty busy every week, we find stuff to fill our time with.

September 28, 2015
I actually took a sneak peak and looked up the score with Siri right
after church 😁 haha so I already knew the score but I didn't believe
it for a good while, me and Elder Landry both got a good laugh and
talk about it. He is from Georgia so we get along because he isn't a
BYU guy. But those highlights are Sooo cool! I love getting those by
the way! You can send those as often as you would like, we love
getting those down here. But yeah this week was a pretty crazy one. We
were supposed to go back to the mother land on Wednesday night so we
were going to Ajaccio to take the boat but of course as fate would
have it there was a car crash and France being France and always have
one road to get places was backed up and we got stuck in traffic for 2
hours and missed our boat. So we had to get up extra early and grab
the one the next morning. And while we were on this one we took a much
needed nap (the boat is 8 hours) and while we were doing that a member
texted us and told us that her daughter had just decided to be
baptized! So we got a new baptismal engagement this week! While we
were sleeping! Haha so that one helped build my faith. I also got to
go see all my friends that were still in aix zone and stuff this week
cause we had a big conference there! We listened to Elder Adler from
the area 70 and he spoke about being united as an equipe and as well
as with God it was a really good talk.

So for P-day this week we went a found a really big mountain and went
up it and took a bunch of cool pictures on top of there and then we
drove back down the other side and saw all these different mountain
ranges and drive by the ocean and just had a calm mice in drive. I
actually was gonna watch the blood moon thingy but I was too tired and
I wouldn't be able to make up the sleep I lost so I didn't. I wish I
did but nah.

But this week was a good one. We have a couple really cool Amis that
we started teaching and have started to get pretty serious with there
is a couple named Patrick and Nathalie who are super Corsican (they
hate 'French people') because apparently Corsicans are different...
Haha but anyway they are about 50 years old and really funny. Patrick
loves hunting and so we get along when we talk about guns and stuff
like that! Idk maybe it's just a guy thing but I love guns, he let me
hold one even though that probably isn't allowed by the rules! Haha
but we have been teaching them about the restoration and about the
plan of salvation and it has been going really well. And we also have
an ami named Matteu who is Catholic and about 24 years old, we have
been teaching him and so far he hasn't seen the differences between us
and the Catholic Church besides Joseph smith, and this past week he
came to us and told he has been reading in the Book of Mormon and had
a bunch of questions about it! It was super cool because as he reads
he is starting to realize all the differences between us. It is cool
to see his understanding grow and progress as he puts forth his own
efforts to find out more.

Anyway hope everything is well at home! I might be needing some Utah
shorts to run in soon, I wanna be decked out in Utah stuff haha there
are too many BYU people here for my liking and we need them to be a
little more quiet... Haha the best I can get out of them is 'ok Utah
is good this year' 😂🙌🏼🙌🏼 proud to be a ute fan. (Now)
Love Elder Schettler
